Park Hyatt Kyoto Story Book

The Park Hyatt Kyoto Story Book was produced to explore two key questions that overlap deeply. Why are people attracted to the city of Kyoto, and why do they stay at Park Hyatt Kyoto? The book was produced to introduce Kyoto and Park Hyatt Kyoto to those who have not yet visited and to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the hotel's opening. The book had to combine the prestige of the Park Hyatt brand with the aesthetics and craftsmanship unique to Kyoto.

The book introduces the ‘culture’ of Park Hyatt Kyoto, which reimagines the sensibility and local history inherited in Kyoto as a unique hospitality experience, through photographs and text, with a vertical axis of five keywords: Keshiki (scenery), Miyabi (elegance), Utsuroi (vicissitude), Oku (deep inside), and Kasane (layering).

The ‘Stories’ chapter features interviews with the experts who created Park Hyatt Kyoto, including the architect, Tetsuo Harada from Takenaka Corporation, interior designer Tony Chi, and garden designer Yasuo Kitayama. The book is designed to be enjoyed not only as a beautiful visual book but also as reading material that provides an in-depth insight into their philosophy, vision, and the backstory of the hotel's construction project.

The layout is inspired by Japanese minimalist aesthetics, with simple, tense typography and rich contextual margins. The book is bound individually by hand by craftsmen using an authentic Japanese technique (Watoji). Japanese binding is highly durable and has a low environmental impact because it does not use glue. They also open easily, making them suitable for long-term display in guest rooms and lounges. It is a technology that combines both beauty and functionality in terms of appearance. Japanese aesthetics permeate every corner of the book, making it a fitting celebration of Park Hyatt Kyoto's progress and its future. The book will be installed in hotel rooms and in the libraries and lounges of Park Hyatt hotels around the world.
